The Big Splash

The first NHC regatta was held in 1900. It included events not seen in recent years: the “Ladies Sailing Canoe Race,” “Walking Greasy Pole,” and the “Married Ladies Race.” But, not to worry, there was no Grandmother’s Hurry Scurry!

The Non-Swimmers Swim, pictured below in 2018, has opened the Regatta for many years. The Big Splash (pictured above) contest provides lunchtime entertainment. The Regatta concludes with the raucous Men’s War Canoes, sometimes almost submerged at the start, often with the kids tipping the canoes after the finish. A Regatta classic: Tom Wilcox’s broken paddle on his first war canoe bow stroke, then paddling with his hands to victory.
